Light Painting

TimeLapsed Android: Camera timelapse idle, with an illustrated camera scene beneath the captured controls

A steady phone and a moving light are enough to begin. Frame the space where the light will travel, set an exposure that keeps the background under control, and choose the blending behavior. The illustrated camera views on this page show how the controls sit beside a developing light painting.

Captured Android interface. Illustrated scenes in camera views.

Move a light. Watch its path stay in the picture.

Keep the first movement simple. A line or a single loop makes it easier to judge brightness, framing and trail behavior. Change the light, the motion or the camera settings one at a time so you know which adjustment changed the result.

Frame Blender and Glow give you different ways to shape the picture. A long accumulated path can become dense quickly. Check the open space around the subject as well as the brightest ribbon, and finish the take before the composition becomes harder to read.

Before the full take

  1. Mount the phone and frame the movement.
  2. Choose blending and expose for the light.
  3. Paint a short pass, then review the result.
